Trisha Barry, LMBT #2785, bought Healing Hands Massage in 2001,soon after North Carolina implemented its licensure laws in North Carolina. Licensed in 1993 in NYC, where licensure has been in place since the '60's, it was an interesting time to play a part in massage gaining acceptance and going mainstream in NC.

It is still advised that consumers ask to be sure that their massage therapist is licensed. One can take the license# and check that the therapist is in good standing at: <http://www.bmbt.org. Someone who is "certified" or even licensed in another state is not properly credentialed in NC without a NC license.

Standards still differ from state to state. For example, Trisha's massage education was 1000+ hours, the norm in NY, whereas in NC, 500 hours is acceptable. Healing Hands promotes and advocates massage as a strong component of stress relief and preventative medicine and shares space with Laura Murphy, LMBT #5315, from Essential Therapy, whose Washington state training also required 1000+ hours. So, clients coming into the shared office of Healing Hands will find other therapists with their own businesses, but all have the same very high standards and consistently high quality.
